Are you interested in becoming a pilot? Have you started your flight training but can't seem to finish? Are you just interested in taking a discovery flight to find out if flight training is for you? We can help you with any of those questions!

NOTE: The webmaster is still doing flight instruction, but our new homepage for flight training is: www.TexasTailwheel.com

Discovery Flights:

Whether you are a serious student looking for an introduction to flight training, someone who's always been fascinated by aircraft, or just looking for a fun thing do to for a birthday or other special occasion, we invite you to take a discovery flight with us! We can currently offer two main packages:

The J-3 Cub Package

This is our recommendation for the single person discovery flight and frankly our favorite. The flight is perfect for the person looking for an economical flight that's fun or the potential student pilot wanting an introduction to basic flying skills.

The aircraft is a recently restored 1946 vintage Piper Cub tailwheel aircraft and has very basic instrumentation allowing you to get a better grasp of the aircraft without the distraction of numerous dials and instruments staring at you.

The flight originates from Boerne Stage Airfield. The flight will last approximately 30 minutes in the air plus ground instruction time.

SPECIAL OFFER!

This is already the cheapest discovery flight we know of in town. If you sign up one or more of your friends to fly with us on the same day and get $5 off of your flight for each additional flight you bring in!

The Skyhawk Package

This is the best value if you want to go faster, see more, and take a friend or two (weight permitting) with you on the flight lesson. The cost for this flight is fixed, and does not fluctuate witb the number on board. We do have to follow weight limits and we won't load the plane up to it's maximum capacity.

This aircraft will provide you with the broadest introduction to aircraft instruments and systems and you will be using it for further flight training. The aircraft will be either a 2003 Skyhawk SP or 1976 Skyhawk M model. Longer flights are also available at normal flight school rates. Want something more fun? Ask about a special longer flight.

The flight will last approximately 30 minutes in the air plus ground instruction time.

Flight Training:

Whether you are looking to do your Private Pilot's license, Commercial Pilot's license, a Flight Review, Tailwheel endorsement training, or just bring a CFI along to help you break the rust off of your certificate, we can help. We can fly in one of the rental fleet aircraft with the flight schools I work with, or in your own aircraft. I currently carry non-owned commercial CFI insurance in order to provide you with an additional layer of comfort if we fly in your aircraft. This protects your investment in the unlikely event we have an accident.

Finish Up Work:

Did you start your flight training, but never finshed? We can help you finish up. We will look at your previous training and chart the best course for you to finish up in an efficient manner.

Vintage Aircraft

I personally love to fly in vintage aircraft - especially those with tailwheels. I have over 100 hours of tailwheel experience and can train you for your tailwheel endorsement. This is a fantastic way for commercial pilot trainees to build time. I can train you in a Piper Cub for a tailwheel endorsement for approximately the same price-per-hour as it will cost you to rent most of the local Cessna 172 Skyhawks. Most pilots who have earned their endorsement believe that tailwheel training improves your skills as a pilot and will give you further options in your future career, or just make flying more fun and intuative.

I have also flown the aircraft below (and others) at airshow and fly-in events with the Alamo Liaison Squadron.

FAQs:

Q. How much does it cost to become a pilot?

A. Currently, we are recommending that a new student budget $8-10,000 for their license. There are some ways we can help you get done for less, but we think that's a wise number to make sure that nothing stops you from your goal.

Q. This sounds really expensive. Do you have any cheaper options?

A. There are a few cheaper options for those who are primarily interested in the recreational aspect of flying. This would include a Recreational Pilot's License or a Sport Pilot License. Other ways to save money are by actually flying more intensively (3-4 times a week) and being very diligent about the ground studies.

Q. How long will it take for me to get my pilots' license?

A. That very much depends on the amount of time you have to dedicate to the process. You will need to invest your time in ground studies as well as the training we do in the aircraft. It cane be done in as little as about two months, or drawn out at a slower pace.

Q. I have a real job. Can you help me with my schedule needs?

A. Yes. We will work with your schedule as much as possible, on a first-come, first-serve basis. I have a few clients right now that regularly want to fly on Saturdays or evenings. I do not do flight instruction on Sundays.

Q. Do you offer financing?

A. Not at this time. I prefer to work with clients who have a debt-free goal, or who are able to secure their own financing for their training.

Q. Can I train in my own aircraft?

A. Yes, we will work with you in your own aircraft. We would prefer to be put down as a named-insured for your safety as well as ours if there is any incident or accident and to protect your investement.

Q. How much do you charge?

The flight schools I work with typically charge $40-45/hr. through the school for instructors. If it's in your own aircraft, I typically will charge $50-55/hr. depending on travel and aircraft complexity. This is in part to help cover my personal non-owned aircraft insurance as a CFI, which also gives you an extra layer of protection.
